We have grown! Indonesia Initiative is excited to announce that we are continuing our work in Indonesia and, now, beyond! We hope you will be follow along with us as we form our new relationships, develop our new partnerships, and work harder to help spread love in the world. Better yet, join us in our efforts! We welcome volunteers to join us in our work. Please see our website or e-mail us for more information about how to do this.
The Friends Peace Teams in Asia West Pacific, formerly Indonesia Initiative, seeks to connect communities of conscience between the U.S. and communities in the Asia West Pacific to provide opportunities for conscientious service. Building mutual friendships requires entering other worlds - worlds very different from our own and finding our common humanity. We are building friendships among people in Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and the US. Currently, we work with human rights defenders, conflict "refugees," and teachers of young children in East Aceh, Tamiang & North Sumatra who do not support violence & war and do not take sides. And we are expanding our efforts as we grow to include other countries. We share a faith... across religion, class & culture ...in the power of a Living Spirit to give life, joy, peace, and prosperity through love, integrity and compassionate justice among people who live in simplicity and equality. We call this our real work - seeking to live with clear consciences and to connect communities of conscience.

This year saw growth of Peacebuilding en las Américas (PLA) programs in Latin America in both the number of Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) workshops given and in the number of partner groups with whom we worked.
Â
The biggest growth was in Honduras, where in this, our first year, we partnered with three groups.

I had lunch recently with Alejo, I can say his name without worrying that he'll be moved up higher on a target list because he, and the group he works with, the Conscientious Objectors' Collective, are already sooooo out there, I doubt anything could add to their profile. (One public act a few years ago was to follow a military parade with brooms, and "sweep up the trash the Army left" while handing out antiwar pamphlets. In Bogota! Remember, there's a war on in Colombia.)
